Let me let you in on a little secret of dog training: with enough time, patience, and practice, you can accomplish almost anything.

Honest—you just have to hang in there and get it done.

On the last night of our basic class, students complete the Life Skills Challenge. When class starts, I review the challenge. We have a station for sit and stay while you fold laundry or place while you answer the door. And as I’m reviewing all of these stations, you can hear the gasp and the murmurs and people looking at each other like, No way is my dog going to be able to do this.

An hour later, after they've completed the course, I always ask, Did your dog do better than you expected? And the answer is almost always a resounding yes.

And my response is that we underestimate our dogs. They can do all of these things—but what they can’t do is read our mind.

If you want your dog to sit-stay while you fold laundry, then ask him to sit-stay. He’s not going to walk up to you when you’re doing laundry and think, Huh, maybe I’ll just lay here. He’s probably going to want to grab a sock or something and run with it and get you to engage in a game.

So if you’ve been training your dog and you have a handful of cues that he understands—start using them in real life. They will work.

You can do it. Your dog can do everything—except read your mind.
